I get a lot of questions from readers about the best companies to freelance for that also pay people on time. It’s a very good question that I know really matters since more people are going the freelance route these days. So, I’ve decided to create a resource guide on the places the La Fronde community (and I) can vouch for as being reliable. The ones you don’t have to chase like a glorified debt collector for payment.
I’ve made a form here for people to share their recommendations. While any tips on writing or editing gigs are great, I’m interested in featuring the whole media landscape: social media, video production, marketing, communications, podcasting — basically, if it’s a media job, it belongs on this list. Anyone who contributes a credible submission will have free access to this resource guide, which will be available soon to our paid members. I’ll have more on the unveiling of this list in the coming weeks, so stay tuned!
In today's paid newsletter: a chat with former Business Insider CEO Barbara Peng about her time leading the newsroom through a major period of change, her next chapter post-BI and advice for women in media. Then: Refinery29's former global editor in chief lands a big new job, Indeed's chief marketing officer breaks down why it's so hard to find a marketing job right now, CBS launches a new women's sports vertical and more on Nikole Hannah-Jones' viral NYT essay.
Coming up in our free Thursday newsletter: The journalist who took a buyout from Politico, then decided to build something of her own. She talked to me about how she launched her media brand and what it's really like running your own outlet.
xoxo,
Stephanie

Barbara Peng on steering Business Insider through media's most chaotic era — and her next moves
When Barbara Peng became CEO of Business Insider in November 2023, she had her work cut out for her. Google was starting to send publishers far less search traffic, and inside the building she inherited a complicated newsroom structure and a brand that had lost sight of the "business" — quite literally.
